Division of Sewer & Drainage Utility

This Division of Sewer is responsible for collecting and treating the City’s residential, commercial, and industrial wastewater, In addition, the Division of Sewer performs all appropriate functions associated with:

  • Processing and treatment of wastewater
  • Discharge treated and processed water
  • Preparation and disposal of by-product
  • Maintain all City-owned sewer mains
  • Maintain City storm drains and catch basins
  • Ensure adherence to applicable State & Federal regulations
  • Maintain continuous operations 24 / 7 / 365

Who is responsible?

When home, business or industrial sewerage problems arise, the Sewer & Drainage Division responsibility begins at the City-owned main line, as mandated by ordinance 18-3.13A.1.

The Division is NOT responsible for home sewer laterals, that is the line from the dwelling to the City-owned sewer main. The homeowner is responsible for correcting any problems occurring from the main to their fixtures.

How Residents can help

Citizens can help prevent drainage problems and possibility of street flooding. How? Be careful during leaf collection and snow removal periods to keep storm drains and gutters clear. Do not discard anything into gratings, drains, or gutters.

Protect Our Natural Floodplain Functions

Keeping our drains clear protects our property and loved ones during floods, and protects our drinking water, wildlife, and environment.

Beating problems before they arise

All City-owned sewer mains are subject to a scheduled maintenance program. When any of the sewer mains becomes clogged, workers respond, using a specialized truck (jet/vac) which breaks the stoppage by using high pressure water or a cutter.

The Drainage Division also operates all storm drains and catch basins owned by the City. Flooding and problems are pro-actively prevented through a scheduled maintenance program. Division responds to clogged basins or lines, and regulates storm waters flowing through JFK Lake and its extension.
